"You're fat. Fat, fat, fatty, fat, fat."
Auntie Julie's eloquent voice echoes through the prison walls. Together, we sit inside the visitors area, her on one side of the table, me on the other. "Where did you get those jeans from? They don't suit you."
"Okay, so I'm having a little trouble finding things that fit at the moment. There's no need to be rude."
"You're having trouble finding clothes that fit because you're fat."
"I'm not fat."
"You're fat."
"Give it a rest."
"Fat."
"I'm not fat, all right. I'm pregnant."
Well, that shuts Auntie Julie up for a few seconds, anyway. Her eyes bulge, the colour drains from her face and she just sort of sits in her chair. Eventually she composes herself, stares long and hard at my stomach and then asks, "So how far along are you? You look ..."
"Big." I nod. "I'm almost sixteen weeks gone. First ultrasound this week."
"You sure you're not having twins."
"Don't be ridiculous."
"So you are just fat then." Auntie Julie cannot help but smirk at her own comment. I open my mouth to say more, but am interrupted by one of the wardens, who lets me know that it is time to go home ...
